Brain Under Construction
Wednesday, March 17, 2021, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
This presentation will focus on the changes of the brain and the consequences of those changes during three periods in our lives: infancy, adolescence, and late adulthood. For infancy, the pattern of brain development and environmental factors that may affect the development of the brain will be addressed; for the adolescence period, how changes in the brain may result in risk-taking behaviors; and for the late adulthood, how changes may lead to the loss of cognitive functions and what can be done to prevent the decline. Presented by Dr. Hisayo Gallo.

Dissecting a Sheep’s Brain
Thursday, March 18, 2021,11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
This demonstration of dissection of a sheep’s brain begins with explanations of some dissection techniques: including descriptions of tools, safety measures and respect for the organ. At the beginning, the olfactory and tactile experiences of having a brain in one’s own hands will be communicated in details, while functions of different parts of the brain are discussed in general terms. As the dissection proceeds, the instructor will share the feel of putting a sharp-knife through the brain, the microphone will pick up the sounds of the brain being sliced. Dr. Jodi Zieverink will discuss the major structures and their functions, as well as what happens when something goes wrong.
