Gaston College Upward Bound Students

 

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Upward Bound provides fundamental support to high school students so that they may graduate from high school, enroll in college, and ultimately obtain a college degree. Upward Bound’s goal is to help students build the skills and motivation necessary to pursue and succeed in college. The program operates year round.

Our Mission:

The mission of the Gaston College Upward Bound is to create an inclusive, engaging, and innovative learning environment that increases post-secondary educational opportunities for modest-income, first generation, and educationally disadvantaged high school students who have a desire to pursue post-secondary enrollment upon high school graduation.

About Upward Bound:

Upward Bound is a federal TRIO program that provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.

 

Upward Bound Provides:

Academic Preparation for College

  • College preparatory courses in math, science, composition, and foreign language
  • Tutoring and test preparation during the academic year
  • SAT/ACT and PSAT Review

Educational & Career Planning

  • Academic advising
  • College and career exploration
  • College and career field trips

Personal & Cultural Enrichment

  • Counseling (personal, academic and career)
  • Mentoring
  • Workshops
  • College and career field trips

College & Financial Aid Assistance

  • Personal assistance with SAT/ACT PSAT registration applications & fee waivers
  • Personal assistance with college admissions applications
  • Personal assistance with scholarship & financial aid applications

Eligibility

Students must attend Hunter Huss or Bessemer City High School, and be in 9th – 11th grade at time of application. Students must demonstrate the desire to attend college, be the first generation in his/her family to go to college, and/or come from a modest-income household, and have an academic need.

You may qualify for Upward Bound if you would be the first person in your family to attend college, or if your family income is at or below the appropriate income level.
