Whether you are just entering the workforce, or have been moving from job to job for years, the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology program at Gaston College can prepare you for a stable, long-term career with great pay. This is a growing field with many local and national job opportunities.

Our curriculum prepares students with all the skills they need to immediately begin working with residential and light commercial systems as a maintenance or troubleshooting technician. Your long-term options after gaining on-the-job experience could include management or control positions. These roles generally offer better pay and are less physically demanding than seasonal work in the field.

Gaston College’s program is designed to give you flexibility and options that can work with your other responsibilities. We offer:

  • Day and night classes for full-time and part-time students
  • Three different certifications
  • A diploma option you can earn in only one year

If you earn your diploma and choose to continue your education at Gaston College with a degree or diploma in our Electrical Systems Technology program, you can also prepare for a more specialized HVAC career.

Heating and air conditioning systems are core parts of building operations and maintenance, but there are a surprising number of ways that your new expertise in refrigeration will be in demand. Clients need trained professionals to service everything from ice machines, to computer server rooms, to grocery or convenience store coolers and freezers. Our program will give you all the skills you need to start specializing in the work that interests you the most.

What You Will Learn

The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology program includes the essential courses and topics you need to be workforce-ready as soon as possible. With our hands-on curriculum, you will learn all about mechanical refrigeration, heating and cooling theory, electricity, controls, safety issues and much more. Skills like preventative maintenance, installation, and repairs are all things you will have in your toolbox by the time you finish your education at Gaston College.
