Citation Guides

Citation styles are formatting rules for citing other authors’ work within your paper (in-text or parenthetical citations) and in a bibliography at the end of your paper (References or Works Cited lists). For an introduction to citation styles, try this Citing Information Module from UNC.citingAsk your instructor which citation style you should use. The most common citation styles are: APA for social sciences; MLA for humanities; CSE (formerly CBE) for sciences; and Chicago for publishing in humanities and social sciences.

In each of the Gaston College Libraries, you’ll find the current editions of citation manuals in the reference section. You may check out older editions of the APA, MLA, and Chicago manuals. Please see a librarian to find the guide for you.

Citation builders are online tools to help you format your resources in a specific style. Remember that these tools are not magic and are sometimes incorrect! It’s always a good idea to verify your citation formats in the official manual or consult your instructor.

If you have a specific question that isn’t addressed here, contact your instructor or the Gaston College Writing Center.
