These tools are often used for imaging, identification, reverse engineering, product development and problem solving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Please contact the Microscopy Lab\u00a0to discuss your microscopy needs.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Leslie Berryhill Taft: 704-825-6293<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Katrina Penegar: 704-825-6292<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Jim Taft: 704-825-6298<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"ttcmicro@yahoo.com\">ttcmicro@yahoo.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Services Offered<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li><strong>Sample Prep and Manipulation\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThis fee is for non-routine sample prep such as unraveling a warp knit or manipulating 5 micron particles for EDX analysis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sample Examination\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nSample investigation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polishing\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nMetal samples or epoxy mounts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optical Microscopy\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nOptical microscopy includes stereo zoom microscopy and compound microscopy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Microscopic Infrared Analysis\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThe lab has an IlluminatIR II for doing microscope ATR or ARO analysis.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Mod Ratio &amp; DPF\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nSimilar to determining fiber dpf with the addition of mod ratio also being calculated<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hot stage Analysis<\/strong><br \/>\nThe lab has a Mettler hot stage. The hot stage can be thought of as Differential Scanning Calorimetry with images instead of a thermal analysis plot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Filament Count<br \/>\n<\/strong>Yarn cross-section via thin sectioning device.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fiber Stain\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nGross determination of fiber types in an unknown sample<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fiber Shrinkage\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nFiber shrinkage determined by Mettler Hot stage and Image Analysis<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fiber Identification\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nUnknown fibers are identified by using a combination of microscopy infrared and cross section analysis. Additional testing may be required such as hot stage and EDX at an additional cost.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fiber dpf\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nCalculate fiber dpf by using image analysis to measures the fiber cross- sectional area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fiber Birefringence\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Failure Analysis\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nDid the sample fail from stress overload, brittle fracture, environmental stress cracking, chemical attack, etc. This does not include the cost of contaminant identification.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Compilation\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Epoxy Cross-section\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThis technique is used to cross-section high strength yarns such as Para-aramid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scanning Electron Microscopy\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThe lab has two scanning electron microscopes. The Amray1830 is a conventional high vacuum SEM with EDXRA (energy dispersive x-ray analysis).<\/li>\n<li><strong>EDX\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nSEM EDXRA (energy dispersive x-ray analysis)<\/li>\n<li><strong>EDX Mapping<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Density Column\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nFiber or yarn &#8211; n=3 \/ Chip &#8211; n=10 \/ Bottle Flake &#8211; n=1<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cross-section\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nDigital image of fiber, yarn or multilayer film cross-section.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crimp per inch by image analysis (n=30)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cotton Maturity Detection<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Contamination Identification<\/strong><br \/>\nThe lab is skilled at contamination identification by combining sample manipulation, polarized light, microscope infrared, hot stage, and energy dispersive x-ray analysis techniques to identify contaminants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chemical Extraction<\/strong><br \/>\nWater, alcohol, hexanes, acetone and xylene for contamination investigation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bicomponent Fiber dpf<\/strong><br \/>\nSimilar to determining fiber dpf, but the weight percent of each component is also included.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Freeze Fracture\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nPrepares foamed samples for SEM imaging<\/li>\n<li><strong>Micro Extraction (HFIP gel analysis)<\/strong><br \/>\nChemical extraction typically involving 0.05 milliliters or less of solvent<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nonwoven Reverse Engineering<\/strong><br \/>\nThe lab is skilled at reverse engineering nonwoven fabrics. The lab can identify each fiber type and the type of binder, providing a complete blend analysis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pyrolysis\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nSample prep for elastomeric materials<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blend Analysis (2 fiber types)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nMicroscopy techniques are used to determined blend analysis when analytical techniques (e.g. dissolve out) cannot be used. Examples of when analytical techniques cannot be used are a heather blend of black and white polyester or a blend of cotton and rayon.
