Study Tours to explore the Culture & Cuisine of Morocco
For 38 years, the Gaston College Study Tours Program has brought groups of students and travel enthusiasts to over 76 countries on six continents. Students have the opportunity to earn college credits on these international trips, and the other travelers experience the sights, sounds, culture, customs, and cuisine of other nations without seeking college credit.
Bob Blanton, the Chair of the Gaston College Social & Behavioral Sciences Department and the Study Tours Director, has planned and will lead the tour as he has since the program began in 1978. This will be the 85th Study Tour he has organized, beginning with an inaugural trip to England and Belgium. Gaston College was the first community college in the Western Carolinas to institute such an international educational travel program. Since Blanton organized the program in 1977, it has gone on to have the longest continuous successful history among community colleges in the state.
An average of 20 to 25 individuals, including Gaston College students, faculty, and staff, participate in each Study Tour. The most recent trips were to Peru in December 2014, and to Croatia and Venice in May 2015.
The Spring 2016 Study Tour will visit the Kingdom of Morocco. The ten-day tour, leaving on May 14 and returning on May 23, includes trips to Casablanca, Marrakesh, Rabat, Meknes and Fes. Blanton, who has traveled to Morocco on three previous occasions, is enthusiastic about introducing the group to an exotic destination that is not on the European or Latin American tourist list. Morocco, with its stable government, strong economy, and welcoming culture, has much to offer visitors from the west. Moroccan cuisine, says Blanton, “is one of the finest in the Mediterranean World,” and has become a favorite of discriminating diners all over the world.
