{"id":28,"date":"2014-04-15T17:09:26","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T21:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gaston.edu\/high-school-equivalency\/english-as-a-second-language\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T16:35:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T21:35:45","slug":"english-as-a-second-language","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.gaston.edu\/high-school-equivalency\/english-as-a-second-language\/","title":{"rendered":"English as a Second Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>About ESL<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>English Language Acquisition, also known as English as a Second Language (ESL), helps adult learners gain the basic and more advanced skills needed to function effectively as parents, workers, and citizens in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Through this program, you\u2019ll achieve competence in reading, writing, speaking and comprehension of the English language.<\/p>\n<p>English as a Second Language can help you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get your high school diploma or its recognized equivalent.<\/li>\n<li>Transition to an American college or training program.<\/li>\n<li>Find success in your job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Now Available<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Morning ESL Classes at the Lincoln Campus\n<ul>\n<li>Class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9am \u2013 Noon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Synchronous Online ESL Classes\n<ul>\n<li>Classes meet virtually two nights a week<\/li>\n<li>There is also an individual online portion each week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Morning ESL classes at the Dallas Campus are full; but, students may get on a waiting list<\/li>\n<li>Evening ESL Classes are available on both campuses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Gaston College ESL Program Details<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Teacher-led, interactive, in-person classes<\/li>\n<li>Classes are for non-speakers through advanced levels.<\/li>\n<li>Students develop college and career readiness skills, including technology, civics and workplace skills through reading, writing, listening, and speaking experiences.<\/li>\n<li>Seats are limited and in high demand.<\/li>\n<li>75% attendance is required for continued enrollment.<\/li>\n<li>English level will be assessed at registration.<\/li>\n<li>Students ages 16 and 17 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaston.edu\/high-school-equivalency\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2025\/09\/Minor-Paperwork-Packet_rev_091625.pdf\">require special paperwork.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For more information, call 704-922-6320 or email <u><a href=\"mailto:ESL@gaston.edu\">ESL@gaston.edu<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Gaston College ESL Attendance Expectations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Success in our program requires time, hard work, and commitment. To support your success, our attendance policy requires that students attend at least 75% of their class meeting hours.<\/p>\n<p>Our ESL program is delivered through hourly instruction. Therefore, regular attendance is defined as arriving on time and participating in the entire class period.
