Careers as a Nutrition and Dietetics Technician

Gaston College offers the only Nutrition and Dietetics Technician (NDT) program in the state of North Carolina. This associate’s degree program allows students to become NDTRs upon graduation and completion of the credentialing exam.

Students also complete the Dietary Manager Certificate program which provides a comprehensive overview of institutional food service management and may take a credentialing exam. Every long-term care facility that accepts Medicare is required to have a Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professional (CDM, CPFF) on staff.

While direct patient care in a healthcare setting requires certification as a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), NDTRs are eligible to assist RDNs with patient care in hospitals, nursing homes, retirement centers, and home health care programs. There are also many career options for NDTRs to work independently, educating healthy populations in schools, correctional facilities, health clubs, weight management clinics, and community health programs.
