As Gaston College SGA Treasurer, Jenny Lopez-Saldivar learned leadership skills and the meaning of friendship

Serving as the Treasurer of the Gaston College Student Government Association helped Jenny Lopez-Saldivar become a better leader. Lopez-Saldivar will graduate from Gaston College in May and intends to continue her education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

“I wanted to be part of the SGA so I could serve the student body,” she said. “I learned that being in the SGA is not just about planning events and having meetings. It goes beyond that — we have become a family.” Lopez-Saldivar anticipated that serving on the SGA executive board would allow her to develop leadership skills, but she gained much more through the experience. She has learned “the meaning of friendship and teamwork.”

Lopez-Saldivar continued, “We became a support system for one another, and the bonds that we created have helped us grow not only as leaders but as individuals. I have learned a lot from my peers; they have inspired me to always reach for the stars and beyond.”

At UNCC, Lopez-Saldivar will major in Social Work. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she plans to work toward her master’s in counseling. “I would love to work with high school or college students to help them navigate through difficult times,” she said. “I want to be able to provide information and support for people who may need someone to encourage them.”

The Gaston College SGA is known as the voice of the students. All students are welcomed to attend SGA meetings and voice their opinions.
