Academic Advising

The Counseling Center offers assistance in advising new students, undecided major students, pre-health science students (those students not yet officially admitted into their major/program of study), and special credit/non-degree seeking students.  Returning students in a specific major/program of study are required to meet with their designated academic advisor or divisional dean's office prior to each registration period in order to review their plans and progress.

General Information

Prior to any registration period, new students must meet with a member of the Counseling Center after attending New Student Orientation.  During this meeting, an academic advisor or counselor will discuss Gaston College program information, advise students how to interpret the results of their placement test, understand how to read and follow “The Register” (Schedule of Classes), how to complete the telephone registration worksheet, and how to successfully register by telephone or in-person.  In addition, basic orientation information specific to Gaston College will be provided.  No appointment is necessary.

The Counseling Center also assists students who wish to change their declared programs (majors) or need their transfer credit evaluated (unofficially.)  In addition, students who need advisement due to academic alert, suspension, and unsatisfactory academic progress (as defined by the Financial Aid Office) are encouraged to meet with a counselor/academic advisor to review and discuss their situation.  No appointment is required for these services.
