At the heart of Gaston College’s most successful student initiatives is a holistic advising model which provides individualized services to “at-risk” students.  Step Up will provide one Success Advisor with the aid of three Peer Mentors to proactively advise 75 students who are either low income or first-generation, with a focus towards minority students between the ages of 18 and 24.

Step Up Program

Holistic Advising

Students will receive assistance from their Success Advisor, who will provide proactive holistic advising, and three Peer Mentors, who will provide additional academic guidance and support.  The Success Advisor will build relationships with these students by anticipating their needs and connecting them to appropriate resources and support early in their academic careers.

Priority Registration

Step Up students will have the advantage of priority registration which will allow them much improved opportunities to schedule high demand classes and will accommodate students’ school, work, and family demands.

Cultural and Professional Enrichment

Students will have a chance to network with business and industry leaders in the community who have the knowledge to provide real-world career guidance.  In addition, participating students will have an opportunity to visit two or more universities each year.

Scholarships

Step Up students will be guaranteed a $250 scholarship upon re-enrollment in the Fall of 2015 with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
