EMS Continuing Education
The Department for EMS Education provides emergency health and safety education in Gaston
and Lincoln Counties, promoting lifelong learning through quality educational programs and
services for emergency medical service agencies, rescue squads, fire department first responders,
medical professionals, healthcare workers, and the public.
EMS Education offers initial certification courses, refresher training, renewal courses, and a variety
of other training. We are always striving to offer quality education and meet the needs of emergency
medical services, first responder agencies, general public, and business and industry. Check the Course Calendar for available classes
EMT-Basic Certification
EMT-BASIC Initial Certification Course
Cost for the course includes: tuition is $65.00, liability insurance is $13.00, and textbook/study guide is approximately $110.00. The student may also be required to purchase other supplies, such as a uniform shirt and stethoscope, as stated in the course syllabus.
Tuition is waived for persons who are active members of rescue squads, fire departments, law enforcement agencies, or other groups eligible for tuition waivers according to the North Carolina Administrative Code, however, everyone must pay for liability insurance and textbook/study guide.
EMT-Intermediate Certfication

Cost for the course includes: tuition is $60 for Basic Anatomy and Physiology for EMS, $65.00 for Paramedic Theory I, $65.00 for Paramedic Theory II, and $65.00 for Paramedic Theory III. Liability Insurance is $26.00, $13.00 for Theory I and II, and $13.00 for Theory III. The student may also be required to purchase other supplies including uniforms, stethoscope, notebooks, and other items as stated in the course syllabus. Costs for books, medical requirements, certification course fees, clinical and field internship tracking system, are available in the program packet.

How do I register for continuing education classes?
Contact the EMS Education office at 704-922-6241 to reserve a seat in a class.
Classes are held on the Dallas campus, Lincoln campus, and East Campus. In addition, many classes are
held off campus at various locations including fire departments, rescue squads, business, industry, and
healthcare organizations.
How to Register
Preregistration is required for all continuing education classes. The pre-registration for a course ends 3 days
before class start state. Classes are subject to cancellation upon insufficient enrollment.
Registration Guidelines
- All Continuing Education students will register at the first class meeting.
- Registration requires name, address, phone number, and birth date.
- Registration fees for Continuing Education Occupational courses vary, based upon the actual hours
of the course. Community Service course fees vary.
- Adult Basic Education and Adult High School courses are free. (All are subject to change by State
legislation.) Senior citizens, 65 years of age and older, who meet North Carolina requirements as
a resident for tuition purposes, may enroll in any course free of charge, unless the course is
designated as "self-supporting."
- There is no registration fee for job-related courses for emergency medical services, law enforcement,
firefighters, rescue personnel who are on an active roster. Additional waivers may apply to those whose
employment require responding to public health emergencies and disasters.
- Self-supporting registration fees vary depending on the course. There are NO fee exemptions for any
self-supporting classes.
- Payment for registration fees may be provided by cash, personal or company check, or Master Card/VISA
credit cards. Verification of identification may be requested. If payment is to be provided by company
purchase order, the original should either be provided to the college's Business Office prior to the convening
date of the class or hand-carried in the
possession of the student(s) registering. The purchase order must state the total amount authorized, the
names or numbers of students authorized, the complete billing address of the company involved, and an
original signature and typed name of the authorizing company official.
- Students ages 16-18 years must have a signed Dual Enrollment form PRIOR to enrolling in class. Students
less than 16 years of age may NOT enroll.
- The college reserves the right to cancel classes at any time due to insufficient enrollment or attendance.
- Class schedules are subject to change, without prior notification, due to instructor or classroom availability.
