ITEMS OF INTEREST ABOUT GASTON COLLEGE

Art instructors will be showing off their talent in the upcoming Art Instructors’ Exhibition
now - October 9, 2009, in the Jeanne Rauch Gallery, Rauch Science and Fine Arts Building, Dallas Campus. A reception will be held Thursday, October 1, 12:00 noon - 1:30pm. A variety of training and certification classes will be offered for those wanting to begin a
new career or increase their knowledge in specific lifesaving areas. The Basic Life Saving Healthcare Provider and Heartsaver course will be held on Friday, October 9, 2009, from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Albright Public Safety building, Dallas Campus. The course will be comprised of two separate components that include the Core Instructor Course and a Discipline Specific Module. Both components MUST be completed prior to moving onto the remaining steps needed to complete your appointment as a BLS Healthcare Provider or Heartsaver CPR Instructor. Gaston College is a partner of the JobsNOW 12 in 6 initiative, a fast tract job training

The Gamma Beta Phi Inductions will be held on Friday, October 16, 2009, at 7pm in

A group of Explorer Scouts will be visiting Gaston College to learn more about the Vet

If you are thinking about building or upgrading a new home , consider economical ways of “going green”. Learn about the practical side of green building at a new seminar, Residential Building: Why Go Green? on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, from 6:30 – 8:30pm, Dalpiaz building, Room 208, Dallas Campus. The seminar, lead by Mark Ingle, founder of Ingle Builders, Inc., will cover everyday, easy ways to implement ideas to resources for going green. Mark is a Certified Green Professional with the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) who has been building houses for over 25 years.  One of his latest projects is at 3367 Quinlan Lane in Pumpkin Center.   The cost is $27 per person. A new workshop, “Doing Business with China,” will be held in November at the East Campus, 7220 Wilkinson Boulevard in Belmont. This highly informative and practical seminar will examine issues surrounding contracts and negotiations, translation hurdles, economic policy, and foreign trade investment. Also, other issues to be addressed include cultural differences, social motivation awareness, and the perception of Americans. The cost is $32 per person. Seating is limited. With support from Gaston College, the Gaston Workforce Development Board is sponsoring Pro-Net Gaston, a networking group for Displaced Professionals in the financial sector and other business areas including Information Technology Managers, Human Resources Managers, Manufacturing Managers, Call Center workers and Sales Managers. The group will meet each Wednesday through the middle of December from 10 – 11:30am in the auditorium, East Campus and Textile Technology Center, 7220 Wilkinson Boulevard, Belmont. Gaston College has created JobsNOW, a fast track education and job training program that will help Gaston County residents complete job training as quickly as possible. The training is for displaced workers but is open to all qualifying adults. This job training program is a partnership with the Workforce Development Board and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Training for the Certified Nursing Assistant Plus Medical Assistant will be held Now – December 19, 2009, on Friday from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm; Saturday, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm and Sunday, 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm, and Welding, October 16, 2009 – March 7, 2010, Friday, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm; Saturday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Mark Hughes, a Gaston College alumni and author of The New Civil War Handbook, will 
do a reading and book signing on Monday, September 21, 2009, at 10:00 am and 7:00 pm at the Morris Library, 2nd floor, Dallas campus. The new handbook is full of facts and 140 photos for readers of all ages covering a variety of topics not covered by past resources on the civil war including Civilians Caught Up in the War; Women and the War; African Americans and the War; and The Civil War and Native Americans. Influences and Inspirations: Art works by artist Jacqueline Dunford will be on exhibit
 September 21 - October 30 at the D.F. Beam Center for Visual Art Gallery on the Dallas Campus.  An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23 from 12:00 noon -1:00 pm. The Gaston College Foundation and the Community Foundation of Gaston County will honor 17 scholarship recipients at the David Belk Cannon Family Scholarship Luncheon on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at 12:30 pm in the new David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute, Room 130 on the Dallas Campus. The David Belk Cannon Family Scholarship was established in 1996 at Gaston College as a memorial to Mr. David Belk Cannon's son, David Belk Cannon, Jr. and his daughter, Rebecca Cannon, both of whom died in a tragic fire. The scholarship now also serves as a memorial to Mr. Cannon who died in 1998. The recipients are selected based on academic achievement and need.

A dedication and open house for the new David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at 4:00 pm on the Dallas Campus. The new 84,000 square foot facility will provide the necessary space to expand the nursing program and support new health programs at Gaston College.  The building is named in honor of the late David Belk Cannon.  In 2004, The Belk Foundation and The David Belk Cannon Foundation joined together to honor his memory by donating $1 million to the college for this project. The gift, one of the largest in the college’s 40-year history, spearheaded fundraising efforts for construction of this major building. The total construction costs for the building, totaling around $13 million, was funded by a combination of private donations, bond funds approved by Gaston County voters, 2000 Higher Education NC Bonds, and state and federal grants.

The Educators of Tomorrow Club will meet on Tuesday, September 22 at 5:15 pm in

The Small Business Center will be sponsoring two QuickBooks classes, Pro Level I and II. The three-part session for QuickBooks Pro Level I will meet on Thursday, October 1, 8, and 15 and QuickBooks Pro Level II on Thursday, October 22, 29, and November 5, from 6:00 – 8:30 pm at the Lincoln Campus, Room 212. Individuals seeking educational enrichment in insurance coding and interested in taking the AAPC Professional Coder’s Exam, Professional Coders Certification Training will be held on Saturday, October 10, 17, and 24, 2009, from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm at the David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute, Dallas Campus. The American Academy of Professional Coder’s exam is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2009, from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm and December 5 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm.  The application deadline is Saturday, October 3. A book shower for the new East Campus Library is underway to collect new and “gently used” books. Construction on the new area is slated to be finished this month.  Like many community colleges across the state, the college’s library budget has been cut 30% due to the poor state economy. Because of limited funds to purchase books, the East Campus and GC Libraries have partnered with the Gaston County Regional Chamber, Mt. Holly Community Development Foundation, Belmont Banner, and Montcross Chamber to sponsor the shower. Also, “Bookin it,” a mobile bookstore in downtown Belmont, will order books, keep a list of donors, put a nameplate in the book, and notify the library when the book comes in. Betty Jones, Chair/Instructor, and the Medical Assisting faculty for the 2009 Medical Assisting graduating class 100% pass rate on the AAMA Certification Exam.

The Textile Technology Center who performed 175 tests for customers and produced 43 samples, yearns, woven and knit fabrics for customers over the last five months.

Audrey Sherrill, Director, and the Counseling staff (Dallas Campus) who saw 4,226 visitors during the months of June, July and August. This is an increase of 22% compared to 2008.

Peggy Oates, Director, and the Financial Aid and Veterans’ Affairs staff who saw 4,692 visitors between June and August. This same group of employees helped students with financial aid applications during 2008-2009 and approximately 7.6 million dollars was awarded to students. This is a 46% increase over 2007-2008.

Three-Thousand Third Graders Visit Gaston College This Fall Through
“Pride in Gaston Traveling Tours”

Third graders from Gaston County Schools will start their second round of visits at Gaston College Monday, September 21 through Tuesday, November 10.  A special program will be provided starting at 12:30 pm for around 100 students highlighting higher education as a part of the “Pride in Gaston Traveling Tour” field trip. In total, nearly 3,000 third graders will be visiting Gaston College this fall.

The College is working, in collaboration with Gaston Together and Gaston County Schools, to enhance the learning and real life experience of third graders in the study of their community.  The program enhances the awareness of Community Pride in Gaston County school children.
From week to week, students will be exposed to a variety of program areas including fire and emergency medical services training, fingerprinting, biotechnology, budgeting and debit card management.

This year’s tours will include a visit to the Community Room at the Gaston County Courthouse where the Gaston County Commissioners hold official meetings; lunch at the Schiele Museum at 10:30 am, followed by a planetarium show from 10:50 - 11:40 am. As a new part of the program this year, the students are visiting Gaston College. Each third grader will receive the “Pride in Gaston Traveling Tour” Activity/Coloring Books which feature 13 sites of interest in Gaston County.

Gaston College Receives Major Federal Grant for $1.5 Million
To Help At-Risk Students

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Gaston College a five-year development grant to help at-risk students. A grant total of $1,592,228 from the Strengthening Institutions Program under Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965 will help the college strengthen student effectiveness and focus more strongly on student retention.

“This is a very competitive grant, one that the College has applied for over the years,” said Dr. Patricia Skinner, president of Gaston College. “Last year, we submitted an application and received a score of 90.33 but the cut-off score was 94.33. Rather than having a competition this year, the Department of Education decided to fund all applicants (from last year) with a score of 89.33 or above.” She added, “This grant gives us the funding we need to improve student retention which otherwise would not be available due to existing state cutbacks and reversions. My thanks and appreciations go to Dr. Silvia Patricia Rios-Husain for her leadership of the team that prepared this extensive grant application and to other members of the committee for their expertise and support.”

The Title III grant will focus on three primary goals: 1) Increase the success and retention rate of at-risk students (for the purposes of this grant, at-risk students have been defined as students receiving financial aid) 2) Improve the academic advising process of at-risk students. 3) Consolidate data tracking and outcome assessment related to retention, persistence, and academic success. Four new grant positions will come to Student Services and Enrollment Management Division: Title III director, success advisor, success counselor and data/outcome analyst. The grant cycle will start October 1, 2009.  Funding will be awarded as follows: Year 1 = $322,780; Year 2 = $307,409; Year 3 = $314,355; Year 4 = $321,129; Year 5 = $326,555.

Dr. Silvia Rios-Husain, Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management, commented, “In this tight budget time, funding was critical to help us meet some of our strategic initiatives and goals to focus on retention and the success of our students. We need the flexibility to support a very diverse population of students through graduation, whether they are the first in their family to attend college or returning for retraining.”

  • The North Carolina Community College Student Government Association Western

A total of 18 community colleges are in the western division and are expected to attend the annual divisional meeting to discuss national, state, and local issues affecting community colleges.   • The Adult High School/GED graduation is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2009, at 7:00 pm in the Myers Center Auditorium on the Dallas Campus.  Around 60 students will be participating in the graduation ceremony.

    September, the Morris Library staff is encouraging students, faculty, staff, and general public to bring in their “old” library cards to sign up for a new one. Stop by the library and replace your library cards free of charge. Cards include a tag to be used with your key chain so you never have to be without it.   • College courses are still available for high school students for the 2009 fall semester through the Learn & Earn Online Program.  Course pre-requisites must be met prior to registration.  Some courses for fall semester are Introduction to Computers, Juvenile Justice, General Psychology, Counseling, Ethics, Constitutional Law, Correctional Law, Expository Writing, Introduction to Paralegal Study, Law Office Management Technology, American Government, General Psychology, Sociology of Family, and Social Problems.   • Individuals seeking educational enrichment in insurance coding and interested in taking the AAPC Professional Coder’s Exam Professional Coders Certification Training will be held on Saturday, October 10, 17, 24, 2009, from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm at the David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute, Dallas Campus. The American Academy of Professional Coder’s exam is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2009, from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm and December 5 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm.  The application deadline is Saturday, October 3. To the staff of the Morris Library who registered 5,439 library card holders, assisted with
6,783 checkouts, and more than 66,000 visits to the Morris Library last year. They demonstrate strong institutional knowledge and reflect a positive image of our campus to the community.

To the Associate Degree Nursing students graduating in May 2010 who will be working this year in cooperation with Gaston County Schools to support the Prevent Blindness program.  Last year, during their community health nursing course, students received 5 hours of training to become a qualified certified screener and volunteer to assist Gaston County School health nurses to provide vision screening for elementary school children. Each student volunteered a minimum of 5 to 6 hours. Throughout the screenings, students found children who had other medical problems, like respiratory problems, and who needed referrals for further evaluation. Students plan to volunteer again this school year with the program.  Nursing students also volunteered to develop material for different groups like blood pressure screening.  They screened over 2,000 citizens last year and plan to break their record by reaching more people in the community.
