OUTSTANDING STUDENTS HONORED BY GASTON COLLEGE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION AT AWARDS BANQUET
The Gaston College Student Government Association honored the college’s 2009 outstanding graduates at an annual Awards Banquet held on Tuesday, May 5 in the Myers Center Cafeteria, Dallas Campus.
Students received divisional awards for academic achievement. Gaston College President, Dr. Patricia Skinner, presented the President’s Award to full-time students that maintained an overall 4.0 grade point average.

GOVERNOR BEVERLY PERDUE TO DELIVER COMMENCEMENT MESSAGE
AT GASTON COLLEGE
Gaston College will confer approximately 615 degrees during its 2009 graduation commencement ceremony being held today, Thursday, May 14th at 7 pm, James H. Barnhardt Student Activity Center, UNC Charlotte Campus, 9201 University City Boulevard, Charlotte, NC.
The commencement speaker is North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue who will deliver a message about “Limitless possibilities of the 21st century” to the families and guests of 450 graduates who will be walking in tonight’s ceremony. (See attachment of Governor’s speech)
Gaston College President Dr. Patricia Skinner and UNC-Charlotte Chancellor Phillip Dubois will give opening remarks before the Governor speaks.

ITEMS OF INTEREST ABOUT GASTON COLLEGE
- The Spring Textbook Buyback is Tuesday, May 12 through Wednesday, May 13 from 9 am to 2 pm, and 4 to 6 pm; and on Thursday, May 14 from 8 am to 1 pm. Also, summer bookstore hours will be 8 am to 6 pm, Monday - Thursday. The Book store will be closed on Friday. Textbook prices are available on www.gaston.bkstr.com
- The Rotaract Club’s mixed paper drive is Tuesday, May 12 and Wednesday, May 13 from 9 am to 2 pm; and Thursday, May 14 from 8 am to 1 pm, in front of the Bookstore, Dallas Campus. Mixed paper products such as notebooks, handouts, magazines, etc. will be collected at the Rotaract booth as part of the college’s “Caught Green Handed” initiative. - The Small Business Center and the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce will present "Leadership not Managership" on Thursday, May 14 from 2 to 4:30 pm, in Room 103 of the Jerry W. Cochrane Science and Technology Building, Lincoln Campus. The 2½-hour seminar is a crash course designed to help individuals learn techniques to develop into a full-throttled leader and expand extremely smart business communication skills. - The Small Business Center and NC LEAP (North Carolina Lawyers for Entrepreneurs Assistance Project) are hosting a free one-on-one legal counseling clinic for small business owners on May 21 from 2 to 4 pm, in Room 114A of the East Campus Classroom Building, Belmont. - The “Mini-Mesters” Program is coming to Gaston College. Beginning this fall, the Accounting Department will offer evening courses in eight week sessions. The new program offers another alternative for adults pursuing their college degrees by providing a more concentrated study per session. Individuals will be able to complete their degrees in as little as two years. For more information, call 704.922.6263

- Joy Morrow, Recruiter/CRC Specialist; Laurel Morrow, Coordinator, Human Resource Development; and Becky McLain, Director, Life Skills Program, who have issued over 500 Career Readiness Certificates (CRC) through the Diploma Plus/ Career Climb program. More than 1,000 CRCs have been issued from Gaston College, with more than one-half of them from the business and industry community. In the past seven months, the college has more than doubled CRCs issued over the past 3 years. The CRC is a portable credential that promotes skills and career development for individuals, and confirms to employers that individuals possess the basic workplace skills in applied math, reading for information, and locating information.
- Kevin Washburn, evening library assistant in Public Services, for being named the Gaston County Schools Media Coordinator of the Year for 2008 – 2009, and Support Employee of the Year for 2008-2009. During the day Kevin is the Media Specialist at Grier Middle School.
- John Anderson, Director, Textile Technology Center, and his staff who spun yarn for socks worn by some of the runners in last week's Boston Marathon. The Textile Technology Center helps develop and test new products for specialized markets with their quality control innovations that support the Made-in-the USA brand.
- Joann Perkins and the entire Campus Café staff who were recently inspected by the Gaston County Health Dept. and received a grade of 99.5%. Also, Cheryl Creech, Donna Smith, and Debra Ryan, members of the Campus Café staff, recently completed the ServSafe training class offered at the college. All passed their tests and are now certified through the National Restaurant Association. A job well done ladies!

GASTON COLLEGE EMPLOYEE NAMED
MEDIA COORDINATOR OF THE YEAR
Gaston College employee, Kevin Washburn, has been named Gaston County Schools Media Coordinator of the Year for 2008 – 2009. At the recent Gaston County Schools Evening of Excellence Ceremony, he was also named the Support Employee of the Year. Kevin is the evening Library Assistant in Public Services at Gaston College, and Media Specialist at Grier Middle School for Gaston County Schools.
According to Kevin’s supervisor, Libby Stone, Public Services Librarian for the Morris Library at Gaston College, “Kevin is so enthusiastic and passionate about his work. You love working with him because his energy is contagious. Kevin is a very caring person who works well with our students.” The experience he brings to Gaston College because of his position at Grier Middle School is an asset to our library. We congratulate him on this achievement.”
He has been an employee at Gaston College for one year and with Gaston County Schools for 6 years.

GASTON COLLEGE STUDENT IS “CAUGHT GREEN HANDED”
BY ROTARACT CLUB AT SPRINGFEST
Gaston College student, Catherine McNeil, is “Caught Green Handed” winning a $25 gift certificate for her recycling efforts at the Gaston College Spring Festival held on Monday, April 20 at the Dallas Campus. To participate in the raffle, students and faculty were required to recycle a plastic bottle, aluminum can, or some form of mixed paper.

"Caught Green Handed" is an initiative to raise awareness about environmental issues on the Gaston College Campuses. Future “green initiatives” sponsored by Rotaract, will include an end of semester mixed paper recycling drive in which students and faculty are encouraged to recycle syllabi, handouts, and notes from the spring semester. In the fall, the club plans to enter Gaston College in a national recycling competition called "Recycle Mania" that pits colleges and universities against one another in various recycling categories. In addition, Rotaract will raise funds to present an environmental speaker’s series at the college.
Gaston College’s Rotaract Club is sponsored by the Gastonia Rotary Club.
Rotaract is a service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30 years of age who are community or university based, and sponsored by a local Rotary club.
Rotaract is made up of 7,000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas.
