May 2007 May 31, 2007 ITEMS OF INTEREST ABOUT GASTON COLLEGE
May 31, 2007 Gaston College’s Early Childhood Education Program Earns DALLAS, NC. . . The Early Childhood Education Program (ECE) of Gaston College has earned national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The college’s ECE program is one of twelve associate degree programs in the U.S. to recently earn this distinction. The NAEYC’s Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation system is a national program that sets standards of excellence in early childhood education for teachers. The organization establishes professional preparation standards to raise the quality of teacher education, and in turn raise the quality of early childhood education programs serving young children. “We have worked very hard to develop one of the best two-year Associate of Applied Science degree programs in the country,” says Wanda Wyont, Chair/Instructor for Gaston College’s Early Childhood Education Program. Our program is student centered and sensitive to the needs of our diverse group of students. NAEYC Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation recognizes associate degree programs at colleges across the country that meet a high standard for preparation of teachers. In two years, only seventeen ECE programs across the country have received accreditation through NAEYC’s Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation program. Gaston College is one of twelve programs that were recently awarded accreditation and 5 programs were accredited last summer. “Teacher quality is a crucial component in providing high-quality early childhood education to millions of children across the country,” said Jerlean Daniel, Ph.D., NAEYC’s Deputy Executive Director. “Both Head Start and many state pre-kindergarten programs call for an associate’s degree or higher for teachers, as well as many child care and preschool programs. Establishing high standards for associate degree programs is an important step towards raising the quality of all teacher preparation programs.” The National Association for the Education of Young Children has more than 100,000 members worldwide. The association is the largest and most influential advocate for early care and education in the United States. Fall classes start Monday, August 20th at Gaston College.
