Cooke Receives 2009 Altrusa Award

Dr. Harry Cooke, Director of Libraries at Gaston College, has been awarded the 2009 Harry Cooke Receives 2009 Altrusa AwardAltrusa Award for Excellence. Pam Smith, president of Altrusa International of Gastonia, made the announcement at the college’s annual faculty/staff appreciation event. Cooke received a check for $750 and a plaque in recognition of his selection.

The Altrusa Club of Gastonia established the award through the Gaston College Foundation to recognize excellence among Gaston College employees. The award is presented to a fulltime employee of Gaston College who personifies the mission of the college and the ideal of lifelong learning through their life both on and off the campus. Candidates were judged on their involvement with students and their impact on the educational life of Gaston College.

Dr. Cooke earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University in 1962 and a Master’s in Audiovisual Education there the following year. He received a Doctorate in Education from Duke University in 1973, and after a stint as an elementary school teacher he returned to college, earning a Master’s in Library Science at North Carolina Central University. His career includes work as a librarian in Dade County Florida Schools and as a teacher at Kittrell College and NC A&T University. Dr. Cooke previously served as Director of Learning Resources and later Director of Telecommunications at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. His interest in technology there led to the creation of the North Carolina Information Highway.

Dr. Cooke joined the staff of Gaston College eight years ago and continues to be interested in technology to make information more readily accessible to students and employees alike. He is described as teaching others to be “vigilant about evaluating the way things are done to stay current with science and technology, and to use technology to work smarter, not harder.” During his time at Gaston College he led the conversion of the library collection to the Library of Congress System, and developed time and cost saving projects such as electronic forms. He hires and serves as a mentor to co-op, work-study and Work First students. He is a United Way volunteer, having served as a loaned executive and as member of the Gaston UW Fund Distribution Committee for the past three years. He is a member of the Western Catawba County Kiwanis Club and a past Lt. Governor of Kiwanis District 4. Dr. Cooke served as president of the Gaston College Staff Senate from 2005-2008 and currently serves as the college copyright officer.

In his typical giving fashion, Dr. Cooke used his prize money plus an additional donation to establish a $1,000 scholarship through the Gaston College Foundation in honor of his wife, Marischa. The scholarship will be awarded to a student in the college’s Veterinary Technology program.

“We are pleased that the Altrusa Club of Gastonia has chosen to invest in Gaston College and its employees,” commented Dr. Patricia Skinner, Gaston College president. “We are grateful to the club for its support and are appreciative of their many contributions to the community. In addition to this award for college employees, the Altrusa Club also provides annual scholarships for three Gaston College students and supports various other organizations in Gaston County.”

Gaston College Foundation, Inc. encourages and secures financial gifts in support of Gaston College and its programs. Gifts to the Gaston College Foundation are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
