Gaston College is looking for 80 people who are interested in obtaining short-term training in the Healthcare field and to begin work in 3 to 6 months in Lincoln County.
Recently, the Golden LEAF Foundation awarded Project HOPE (Health Occupations Providing Employment) a $220,000 grant to fund a fast-track training program at the college for the development of existing curriculum into a short-term, fast-track format, instruction, instructional supplies, and training equipment. Dr. Sharon Starr, Dean of Health Education, says “Two cycles of fast-track Nurse Aide I/Phlebotomy and Basic Emergency Medical Technician classes will be developed and offered starting Summer/Fall 2009 semesters to provide training for a maximum of 40 potential CNA’s and 40 potential EMT’s. A third class for EMT is anticipated for the Spring 2010 semester. It is expected that the CNA students will successfully complete CNA and phlebotomy training and will be eligible to take the exams to become listed as a nursing assistant on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry and will be eligible to take the exams to become a certified phlebotomist. Also, the EMT students will successfully complete the training and be eligible to take the state exam to become a certified EMT.” She added, “The goal is for 90% of Project HOPE participants to be hired in their field of study within 90 days of passing their certifying exam.”
The first track of the CNA classes began this week on July 6 before starting Phlebotomy classes on Monday, August 24. The first track of EMT classes will also start on August 24. This fall, weekend 2nd track CNA classes will be offered Friday- Saturday.
