ITEMS OF INTEREST ABOUT GASTON COLLEGE

A series of FREE seminars for Small Business owners and current or prospective entrepreneurs are being offered at Gaston College. The sessions will be held at the Lincoln Campus, 511 S. Aspen Street in Lincolnton, or the East Campus, 7220 Wilkinson Boulevard, Belmont. The seminars to be offered are:

  • Recordkeeping – Learn how to “set up the books” for your business on Monday, February 23, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, Room 118, Lincoln Campus and Thursday, March 5, 6:30 -9:00 pm, Room 219, East Campus
  • Marketing II: Strategy – Learn how to develop Marketing Strategy: Your Action Plan for Operational and Promotional Success. Covers competitive analysis, trends, pricing, target market, profiling and prioritizing, mission, vision, and more, on Thursday, February 26, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, Room 219, East Campus and Monday, March 2, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, Room 118, Lincoln Campus

The Gaston College Career Day will be held on Wednesday, February 25, from 9:30 - 12 noon in the Myers Center Auditorium. Approximately 60 employers from regional health providers, governmental agencies, service providers, retail sales firms, and various branches of military service will be available to talk to attendees. Company representatives will be on hand to answer questions, discuss employment opportunities and hiring procedures, as well as prospects for the future in the current economy. In celebration of Women’s History Month, Gaston College will present “Other Worlds” featuring work of Margery Loudon Moody, March 9 – April 24 in the Jeanne Rauch Art Gallery, Rauch Science and Fine Arts Building on the Dallas Campus. An artist reception is scheduled Thursday, March 12 from 12 noon – 1:30 pm with gallery talk starting around 12:30 pm for about 20 minutes. This exhibit features over 20 paintings and collages. The event is sponsored by the Gaston College Minority Affairs Committee and Art Department. The Gaston College Small Business Center will sponsor a workshop to teach business techniques on how to prepare for, and grow their business in a stormy economic climate through a FREE seminar sponsored by the Gaston College Small Business Center. Business Success in Tough Times will be held on Tuesday, March 17 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm in the Classroom Bldg., Room 118, East Campus in Belmont. Discover the secrets to business success in economic downturn and become skilled on how to keep your business going and to hold your own during tough times. No pre-registration is required. The Adult High School/GED graduation is scheduled for Friday, March 20 at 7 pm in the Myers Center Auditorium on the Dallas Campus. Over 50 students are expected to participate in this year’s ceremony.

Introduction to Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) will be held on March 24th and Introduction to Statistical Programmable Logic Controller (SLC) and Micrologix will be held on March 25th at the McNaughton-McKay Electric Company, 1408 Castle Court, Gastonia. The March 24th workshop is an introductory level course focusing on the basic PLC concepts and terminology. The March 25th workshop is an introductory level course focusing on the basic SLC-500 concepts and terminology. Seating is limited to 12. For more information or to register, call 704.922.6447.

The Dedication and Open House of the Jerry W. Cochrane Science and Technology Center will be held Thursday, March 26 at 3:30 pm, Lincoln Campus, 511 S. Aspen Street, Lincolnton. This event is open to the public.

The Business and Information Technology Division will be offering two career readiness seminars for Gaston College students starting in March. The Resume and Cover Letter writing class is scheduled for Friday, March 27 from 12:30 - 1:45 pm, Room CET 45, and Interviewing Techniques will be held on Friday, April 24 from 12:30 - 1:45 pm, Room CET 45. Gaston College is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2009-2010 academic year. Scholarship awards can range from $250 to more than $2,500 each through the Gaston College Foundation. More than $100,000 in scholarship assistance is available to students through the Gaston College Foundation. The deadline is March 31. OVER 60 EMPLOYERS TO ATTEND GASTON COLLEGE CAREER DAY

Over 60 employers will be available at the Gaston College Career Day on Wednesday, February 25, from 9:30 a.m. until 12 noon in the Myers Center Auditorium, Dallas Campus. This annual event is expected to attract more than 600 Gaston College students and alumni.

Employers from regional health providers, governmental agencies, service providers, retail sales firms, private businesses, and various branches of military service will be on hand to talk with job seekers. Company representatives will be available to answer questions, discuss employment opportunities and hiring procedures, as well as prospects for the future in the current economy.

“This is one of the largest gatherings of employers in one single location held in Gaston County annually. Gaston College students and alumni should come prepared with resumes and portfolios and be prepared to talk with employers about employment opportunities,” said Brenda Kincaid, Director of Cooperative Education and Student Employment.

She added, “With the current economy, this is an employers’ market and it is imperative that job seekers dress for success, use their best communications skills and be patient in finding the right employment opportunity.”

Gaston College’s Cosmetology Program Celebrates
First Class of Graduates

Sharon Danielle Grant, Patricia Whitworth, Catherine Cunningham, Gaston College Cosmetology Instructor, Amber Ervin, and Shani Clyburn are the first graduates of the Gaston College’s Cosmetology Program CelebratesGaston College Cosmetology Program. Each of these ladies began their training with the college in Spring 2008. Cosmetology students are required by the NC State of Cosmetic Arts to study various subjects including anatomy, chemistry, hair, skin and nail care along with their diseases and disorders. Also, they are required to complete mannequin and live performances in a salon clinic environment in order to sit for the state exam. Each of these ladies is currently employed in local salons throughout Gaston and Lincoln County. The Gaston College Cosmetology classes are held off campus at the School of Cosmetology located at 1575 North Aspen Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

In February, the School of Cosmetology is offering a Get 2 “Day of Beauties” for only $55.00. Customers can pick any three of five services: shampoo, cut and style, shampoo and style, manicure, pedicure, or basic facial. The special ends Saturday, February 28th. Walk-ins are accepted from 9 am-1 pm at the School of Cosmetology, or to schedule an appointment call 704.732-3629.

Gaston College Instructors are Nominated for
Instructor of the Year

Tom Whitaker, Instructor/Program Coordinator, Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Angela King, Instructor, Associate Degree Nursing, Health Education; Tonia Broome, Gaston College Instructors are Nominated for Associate Dean, Liberal Arts & Sciences; and Mark Shellman, Chair/Instructor, Information Technology have been chosen as Divisional Instructors of the Year. Each of these winners may choose to compete for the "2009 Gaston College Instructor of the Year" and a $750 prize by submitting a written composition and doing an oral presentation to a selection committee. The Instructor of the year automatically becomes the candidate Gaston College will submit to the "North Carolina Community College System 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award."

  • Learn how to plan, apply and pay for college at the Gaston College FAFSA Completion Day on Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 9 am to12 Noon, Morris Library, Dallas Campus. This FREE session will help students seeking financial aid for the 2009-2010 academic year who are planning to attend Gaston College. Information on scholarship and grants will be available. Students will need to bring their own 2008 federal tax returns and W-2 forms. Students will also need to bring their parents’ 2008 federal tax returns and W2 forms if they are under 24 years of age.   • Cosmetology Instructor, Catherine Cunningham and the first graduates of the Gaston College Cosmetology Program, Sharon Danielle Grant, Patricia Whitworth, Amber Ervin, and Shani Clyburn.
  • Phil Welch, Director/Instructor, Regional Emergency Services Training Center, who was designated as a “Chief Fire Officer” (CFO) by the Commission on Professional Credentialing. He joins an elite group to become one of just 616 CFOs in the country.
  • John Anderson and The Textile Technology Center staff which received a $50,000 grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to provide training to alpaca breeders in the Carolinas to enhance their ability to develop uses for sheered alpaca fiber.
