We feel it’s important that our students feel confident at every level when going out to meet with potential employers.” During the hour-long session, students will learn more about dress, resumes, interview tips, how to order at a business lunch and much more. Michelle Byrd, Professional Development Instructor of Office Systems Technology (OST), will be the presenter. February 27, 2007 Gaston College is Awarded A $1 Million Grant DALLAS, NC … Gaston College has been awarded a $1 million matching facilities and equipment grant for construction of the David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute. The North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges awarded the money to the college to support the building of this new complex estimated to cost around $19.5 million. “We were awarded this grant in large part because of the financial support we have received from the local community,” said Dr. Patricia Skinner, president of Gaston College. “Over $1.5 million in private donations plus local bond funds are helping move this project forward. The funding from the State Board will also help us leverage even more support for health education and wellness programs that are sorely needed in our service area.” Last November, Gaston County voters showed their support for the Health Education Institute and the construction and renovation of two other campus buildings by passing a $24.9 million bond referendum. Bond funds will provide significant but partial funding for the David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute. Of the 55 applicants, Gaston College was one of only 18 colleges selected to receive a grant from the State Board. A very strict point system based on the ratio of non-state dollars raised was used for selection of applicants. Gaston College’s selection acknowledges the significant impact the Health Education Institute is expected to make in the area by providing education for more health professionals in Gaston and Lincoln counties. When completed, the David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute will support health-awareness programs that could help improve the overall quality-of-life for all ages. “We are encouraged by this support in funding from the State Board and are grateful for the local financial support that made this grant possible,” said Nancy Porter, Dean of Health Programs for Gaston College. “We look forward to continuing to play a major role in the health of the community.” Construction of the David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute is expected to begin this fall, with completion as early as spring 2009. February 16, 2007 Motivational Speaker and Author DALLAS, NC. . Author and motivational speaker Marcus Engel will speak at Gaston College on Wednesday, February 21 from 11a.m. -12 p.m. in the Myers Center Auditorium, Dallas Campus. Engel, who became a professional speaker at age 22, will share his unforgettable message about his journey of recovery facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles. He will discuss with students, faculty and staff ways to tackle life’s challenges as opportunities by eliminating self-limiting behaviors, striving to achieve success by making intelligent choices, and ways to live life to the fullest. During his freshman year of college, Marcus’ life took a dramatic turn. Following a Saturday night hockey game, he and some friends were headed to a local diner for a midnight snack. They never made it. As the carload of teenagers pulled into a busy intersection, a drunk driver traveling at twice the speed limit slammed broadside into the small car with only a thin piece of metal separating Marcus from the full impact of the oncoming vehicle. He awoke blind, restricted to a hospital bed, a feeding tube and respirator, and faced with hundreds of hours of reconstructive facial surgery. This event is co-sponsored by the Gaston College Counseling Center and the Student Government Association. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call Amy Davis at 704.922.6224 or e-mail davis.amy@gaston.edu. February 16, 2007 McCullough Is Presenter At DALLAS, NC. . .An English instructor at Gaston College will be one of the featured presenters at the Multicultural Women’s Development Conference April 20-22 in Hayesville, NC. Alicia McCullough will give a presentation titled "The Struggle for Jobs and Equity: African Americans in the Textile Mills of Gaston County." She will focus on African Americans’ late entry into manufacturing jobs in textiles and the use of litigation to gain equity with whites in both the types of positions held and the kind of promotions offered them. Also, her talk will highlight information gathered through the oral histories she undertook with local African Americans as part of the NEH grant. Ms. McCullough served as project director for a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) “We the People” grant in 2005-2006. The grant provided Gaston College with close to $30,000 in faculty professional development funds. Over the course of a year, approximately ten Gaston College faculty and Gaston County School District teachers participated in a series of workshops and field trips. The workshops were led by experts on the topics of race, labor, oral histories and community organizing, and the rise and fall of Gaston County as the epicenter of the world’s textile manufacturing empire. The field trips were to museums and other archival resources for oral historians. Participants were encouraged to use oral histories as a teaching tool. Ms. McCullough has been a member of the Gaston College faculty for 14 years and a former member of the UNC Charlotte faculty. The seventh annual Multicultural Women's Development Conference is sponsored by One
