GASTON COLLEGE PRESENTS LEADERSHIP NOT MANAGERSHIP SEMINAR AT THE LINCOLN CAMPUS
The Small Business Center and the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce will present the seminar "Leadership not Managership" on Thursday, May 14 from 2 – 4:30 pm, in Room 103 of the Jerry Cochrane Science and Technology Building, Lincoln Campus.
This 2½ -hour seminar will help individuals learn the techniques to develop into a full-throttled leader and expand extremely smart business communication in a crash course. Topics of discussions will include learning why the oldest, most tenured, or senior ranking person is not always in charge, tools effective leaders use to steer faithful followers on the superhighway to success, and interpersonal skills that rev up workplace production as well as how to attract, develop, and maintain business. In addition, participants will acquire Rolls Royce leadership presence, and how to emerge with the skills you need to greet and approach colleagues, customers, and visitors appropriately and with ease.
This presentation will illustrate the value of relationships and empower the professional with skills to meet new people at events while nurturing established relationships. Also , participants will learn how to prepare for success and preserve it by doing follow-up that will further develop and maintain their important professional networks as well as find out how to distinguish business opportunities at social events and when, where, and how to follow up on them.

A 30th Anniversary Celebration reception for the Gaston College Study Tours Program will be held Thursday, April 30 from 5:30 to 7 pm in the Jeanne Rauch Gallery, Rauch Science and Fine Arts Building, Dallas Campus. Gaston College radio WSGE 91.7 FM is kicking off it’s Spring Membership
Drive on Monday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. The station’s goal is to raise $30,000. All who pledge a gift on or before April 26 will be eligible to win a Toshiba laptop computer. Membership pledges can be entered online, paid in installments, or through payroll deduction. The membership drive will be held through Saturday, May 9. The Gaston College Annual Health Fair is scheduled for Thursday, May 7 from 11 am to 1 pm in the Myers Center breezeway, Dallas campus. A diversity of displays and booths will be available with information on health, nutrition, and fitness for body, mind and spirit. There will be free chair massages, blood pressure and diabetes screenings, and a limited number of cholesterol screenings for $10 each. There will be many community booths on hand to provide helpful information. Also, demonstrations on yoga, line dance, karate, fitness and Tai Chi, as well as tips on nutrition and body composition, will be offered throughout the day. Gaston College will begin a four-day, 40-hour workweek during the summer semester as part of its overall effort to control and decrease costs during the current struggling economy. The summer schedule will apply to all three campuses. Operating hours will be 8 am - 6 pm, Monday-Thursday beginning Monday, May 11th and ending Friday, August 14th.

Three students represented the college in several events competing against other college and university students from across the state. Lisa McLean placed 6th and Marjorie Sharp placed 7th in the “Impromptu Speaking” event. Ellis Todd King placed 7th in the “Computer Concepts” event. Future Business Leaders of America - Phi Beta Lambda is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational association with a quarter million students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. FBLA-PBL is the largest business career student organization in the world. The postsecondary division reaches over 11,000 college students. NC Association of Textile Services
Endows Scholarship at Gaston College
The North Carolina Association of Textile Services and Sunshine Uniform Service, Inc. have endowed a scholarship fund through the Gaston College Foundation to benefit future Gaston College (GC) students. The first award from this new fund will be made for the 2010/2011 academic year. Students in any course of study will be eligible for the award with preference going to children, grandchildren, or relatives of Sunshine Uniform Service employees.
“Gaston College has a wonderful reputation and provides so many opportunities for our community”, said Jay Beam, a member of the Association who presented a $5,000 check to the GC Foundation to begin the fund. “We wanted to be part of making it a little easier for students to get a degree.”

GASTON COLLEGE MOURNS THE DEATH OF STUDENT
IN KINGS MOUNTAIN CAR CRASH
Today members of the Gaston College campus community are mourning the tragic loss of student, Jennifer Louise Huffstetler who was killed in a car crash traveling on U.S. Highway 74 Wednesday evening.
Ms. Huffstetler, 24, was a college transfer student earning her Associate in Arts degree at Gaston College. She had attended Gaston College since 2004. Jennifer is the daughter of Roy and Melva Huffstetler from Kings Mountain. She was known around the campus as an energetic, compassionate, and loving student who excelled in the Humanities and participated in campus and community activities. Jennifer’s goal was to transfer to UNC Charlotte to receive her 4-year degree to become a librarian. Her mother, Melva, is a former Gaston College employee.
Gaston College President Dr. Patricia Skinner said, “Students, faculty and staff were informed of Jennifer’s death by telephone and by e-mail today during the college’s spring break week.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Gaston College family, we extend our deepest sympathies to Jennifer’s family and friends during this period of loss. We will cherish the fond memories of Jennifer’s time at the college. She was always full of energy and optimism and brought joy to many people.” said Dr.Skinner.

The Gaston College HEROES 2009 Summer Camp is for rising 10th – 12th graders (for the 2009-2010 school year), interested in healthcare careers. The camp will be held June 22 – 25 from 9 am - 3 pm on the Dallas Campus. Students will interact with healthcare professionals, tour a healthcare facility, meet other health career students, and participate in an array of medical science workshops that will introduce them to various careers in healthcare. To apply, students must live in Gaston or Lincoln County, have a 2.5 or higher GPA and have parent/guardian permission. The registration fee is $25 which must be submitted with the application by Wednesday, April 15. The Gaston College Therapeutic Massage Program will be offering a series on The Pathway to Massage Therapy on Saturday, May 9, June 20 and July 18, Room B-100, Lincoln Campus. The Textile Technology Center of Gaston College will be hosting a two-day symposium on the future of Alpaca Fiber in North Carolina on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5, at the East Campus, 7220 Wilkinson Boulevard, Belmont. Over 100 alpaca breeders and suppliers to the craft industry are expected to attend to discuss the future potential of this profitable and growing industry in the state. Some manufacturing and industry experts consider Alpaca fiber to be the greenest product on the planet that produces 28 shades of alpaca fiber that is hypo allergenic. Alpacas are those cute little animals that look like miniature llamas. If you have a passion for Radio/TV and Audio production, check out Gaston College’s Broadcasting Program. As part of the NC Community College system, tuition for its two-year AAS degree is $2,800 instead of up to $12,000 for a private school. The degree is
