The Gaston College Center for Advanced Manufacturing, an educational and training facility located adjacent to the College’s Dallas campus, will be formally dedicated during a day-long open house event on Friday, September 15, 2017.

CAM Building

Discussions among Gaston College, Gaston and Lincoln counties, and local industry, about how the College can best support the advanced manufacturing and energy industries vital to the economic growth of the region led to the Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) project. Building a facility with specialized classroom, laboratory, and training space for developing skilled workers in those sectors became the objective.

With strong financial support from local, state, and federal funders, construction on the 21,000 square foot building began in November 2015. The site is on property that belongs to Gaston College and is within the Gastonia Technology Park. CTL Packaging, Dixon Valve, LANXESS Corporation, REPI, and Rochling Engineered Plastics are among the other Gastonia Technology Park tenants.

Some limited classes have been held in the Center beginning with the summer 2017 session. The facility will be fully operational for the fall semester, which begins on Monday, August 21. CAM is designed to accommodate many of the advanced and technology-rich industrial training programs offered by Gaston College. Designated laboratory and training spaces include:

  • CAM Integrated Lab (CAMIL)
  • Mechatronics
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
  • Plastics and Chemicals Processes
  • Industrial Systems Technology
  • Instrumentation
  • Alternative Energy
  • Robotics

Also included in the Center are a reception area, offices, a conference room, and classrooms. New industries seeking to locate in this region are invited to establish a “home base” in offices and meeting spaces at CAM until their permanent facilities are operational.

“The Center for Advanced Manufacturing is the realization of Gaston College’s commitment and dedication to meeting the educational and training needs of our local workforce,” said Dr. Patricia Skinner, President of Gaston College. “The classes and hands-on learning that will be offered at CAM and on our Campuses, the Gaston College Apprenticeship 321 program, and our Jump Start Your Career courses, all prepare students to be the highly skilled employees that regional manufacturers and industries require.”

The CAM dedication ceremony will take place on Friday, September 15, at 10 a.m. in the Center for Advanced Manufacturing building. The public is invited to tour the facility during the open house event that runs from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that day.
