The Medical Assisting diploma program application window will open October 1 each year for the summer cohort, and will close on March 15. The fall cohort application will open on March 15 and close on August 1, each year.

Requirements for Admission

The goal of the Gaston College Medical Assisting Program is to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

The Medical Assisting Program at Gaston College has a retention rate of 75% for the admission cohort that entered in 2020, and there are a number of support services available to medical assisting students at Gaston College so that they can successfully complete the program.

The medical assisting certification exam passage rate for the 2020 Gaston College Medical Assisting Program graduates is 100%.

The Medical Assisting Program at Gaston College has a job placement rate of 92.31% for the 2020 Gaston College Medical Assisting Program graduates.

OCCUPATIONAL RISKS

Medical Assisting is a profession with many rewards, as practitioners can perform both administrative and clinical services, filling several roles in a variety of healthcare environments. The Bureau of Labor Statistics clearly outlines that it is a growth field, with an anticipated 18% growth from 2020 to 2030.

Medical Assistants work directly with providers and patients, with the goal of providing healthcare and ensuring patient safety. It is a position with a great deal of responsibility.

As with any healthcare position, there are certain occupational risks that come into play with being a medical assistant, and those hazards include the following:

  • · Sharps injuries
  • · Bloodborne pathogens and biological hazards
  • · Chemical and drug exposure
  • · Ergonomic hazards from lifting, sitting, and repetitive tasks
  • · Latex allergies
  • · Stress

Articulation Agreement

The Gaston College Medical Program has a 2+2 articulation agreement with the Cabarrus College of Health Sciences for a Bachelor of Science in Health Leadership for students who have achieved their Associate Degree in Medical Assisting.
