Are you between careers or looking for a new career? Gaston College offers a variety of classes, many free to persons who are unemployed or have been notified of a pending layoff, to help you explore career options or begin training for a new career. Courses are also offered in basic computer skills, "soft skills", money management, interviewing, resumes, job search, and workplace readiness in medical and office careers. Also, some HRD classes are offered and taught in Spanish to better prepare our growing population for the workplace.Click here for classes.

American Sign Language

Learn American Sign Language with a qualified instructor. ASL is the dominant sign language used with the deaf community in the US. It is a complete, complex language that not only uses hand signs, but also other movements and postures of the body in the art of communication and is the 4th most commonly used language in the U.S. In this fast, skill-based course, you will learn to communicate with the deaf community in the workplace and other venues.

Career Pathways Opportunities

A selection of career exploration courses are offered through Human Resources Development. These include Certified Nursing Assistant/Nursing, IT/OST, Construction, Massage Therapy, and Medical Office Administration.

Spanish for the Work World

This course is designed to provide beginning Spanish for those individuals who need to communicate with Spanish-speaking employees and clients. You will learn dialects and vocabulary as well as cultural differences. You will also gather tips to facilitate successful encounters with those who use Spanish as their first language.

Career Readiness Certificate (CRC)

The North Carolina Career Readiness Certificate is a portable credential that promotes skills and career development for individuals and confirm to employers that you possess the basic workplace skills in Applied Math, Reading for Information, and Locating Information. Many local employees recognize, recommend, or require this certificate for incoming employees or current employees seeking promotion.
