The Social and Behavioral Sciences Department at Gaston College is one of the college’s most diverse academic units.  Housed in this department are the following six disciplines:  History, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Psychology, and Sociology.  The mission of the department is to provide outstanding teaching, innovative learning experiences (including classes taught in overseas locations), soft skill for the workplace, and opportunities for personal growth.  These will advance a student’s understanding of who they are in relation to the world around them, and will provide them with necessary tools, such as critical thinking, that will help promote lifelong learning and will maximize their career potential and contributions to society and the world.

The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences is positioned uniquely to help students fulfill their general education requirements and to attain knowledge that will help them explore the diverse and complex global society in which they live.
