The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran's Affairs is located on the 2nd floor of the Myers Center. Office hours are from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, and from 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, holidays excluded. During the summer months, the office closes at 12:00 p.m. on Fridays. We can be contacted at: The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran's Affairs awards financial assistance to curriculum students in the form of scholarships, grants, and work programs. Every effort is made by the institution to help students who need assistance. Financial aid is intended to supplement, not replace, financial contributions from the student and his or her family. Financial aide is distributed at Gaston College without regard to race, sex, religion, national origin, age, or disability. There are two types of financial aid: gift assistance and work. Gift assistance includes grants and scholarships that do not have to be repaid provided that the student attends classes through the 60% point of the semester and maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress (see the Financial Aid Office for this information). Work is a self-help program. Work enables students to pay part of their expenses through their own earnings. The work study program gives students the opportunity to work and earn money at or above the current minimum wage. Effective July 1, 2007, Gaston College does not participate in the Stafford or Federal Direct Loan programs. There are many sources of alternative or private loans to help provide funding to students of the College. Gaston College does not endorse the use of any particular alternative loan program, but rather encourages its students to thoroughly review the programs available and to select the program that best meets their personal needs. Gaston College is approved by the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) to offer VA educational benefits. Students who are eligible to receive veterans’ benefits must come to the Veterans Affairs Office in Room 242 on the second floor of the Myers Center located on the Dallas Campus to complete the necessary forms before benefits can begin. Students who are eligible for VA benefits should submit a copy of their class schedule to the VA Office. It is the student’s responsibility to follow college and/or Department of Veteran Affairs regulations. Failure to do so may put the student in repayment. Gaston College’s Veterans Affairs Office must be notified of any schedule changes. In addition, if a student changes his program of study, the student must complete a Petition for Major Change form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office and also submit the appropriate DVA forms to the Veterans Affairs Office.
How Financial Aid Eligibility is Determined Gaston College uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to assess the financial condition of financial aid applicants. Information entered onto the FAFSA is analyzed according to the requirements of the U.S. Congress and federal guidelines. This ensures that all applicants are treated fairly and equitably. Such items as income, assets, family size, marital status, and number of family members in the household in college are used to determine eligibility. Results of the FAFSA indicate the amount the student and his or her family can contribute toward the student's education. Most financial aid is based on need rather than on scholastic record. Financial need is the difference between the total education expenses and what the family is expected to contribute.
How to Apply for Financial Aid Students who are entering Gaston College and are in need of financial aid are requested to follow this application procedure:
Applicants may apply for a scholarship, grant, work-study, or any combination of these. The total combined sum of these must not exceed total financial need. The awarding of aid is based on funds available. Students will be notified of their financial aid eligibility by award notification letter. The letter will state the type and amount of award. Students should retain their copy of their award notification letter for their records. If the student does not plan to enroll or use their financial aid award, the student should notify the financial aid office. In the event that a student receiving aid withdraws from the institution and stops attending all of their classes prior to the 60% point of the semester, the student will be responsible for repayment of a prorated amount of any portion of payments that were extended to the student for living expenses and that would no longer be attributed to meeting expenses related to attendance. If the student never attends a class(es), the student is not eligible to receive financial aid for the class(es) and will be responsible for repayment and billed for the aid in which you became ineligible. Students will be ineligible for future aid until repayment has been made. The student has the obligation to maintain the "Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards" as defined specifically for financial aid recipients. Failure to maintain academic progress will result in the loss of eligibility for financial aid. Eligibility may be regained unless the student has exceeded his or her eligibility to receive federal aid. Student coursework must be restricted to the major that is on file in the Office of the Registrar. Courses taken outside of the approved major may require adjustment to the financial aid award. Federally supported programs are funded by the government through the U. S. Department of Education. These programs consist of Federal College Work Study, Federal Pell Grants, and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). Students must meet the following requirements before they can receive federal financial aid funds:
The Federal Pell Grant program is designed to provide financial assistance to those who need it. The amount of the Federal Pell Grant is determined on the basis of the student's and his or her family's financial resources and the expected family contribution. The Federal Pell Grant Award is a grant and does not have to be repaid as long as students maintain eligibility requirements for federally supported programs and attend classes through the 60% point of the semester. Every student who is applying for financial aid at Gaston College must apply for the Federal Pell Grant by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) This program of direct supplemental grants of financial aid is for students of exceptional financial need who without the grants would be unable to continue their education. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be eligible for this grant. Federal College Work-Study Program Gaston College participates in the college work-study program, which provides on-campus work opportunities for students needing financial assistance to attend school. Work is available in the library, faculty offices, administrative offices, laboratories, shops, and building and ground maintenance. Students working under this program are paid monthly for the work performed. In arranging a job and determining how many hours a week a student may work under this program, the Financial Aid Office will take into account the student's (1) need for financial assistance, (2) class schedule (enrolled in at least 6 credit hours), (3) health, and (4) academic progress.
North Carolina Student Incentive Grant Legal residents of North Carolina who are enrolled full time and maintain satisfactory academic progress may apply for the North Carolina Student Incentive Grant (NCSIG). Students must demonstrate "substantial financial need." The NCSIG program is administered in North Carolina by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Details of the application process are available from high school guidance counselors and from the Financial Aid Office. Application deadline is March 15 each year for the following academic year. North Carolina Community College Grant The North Carolina Community College Grant is a need-based grant established by the NC Legislature to provide funds to help meet the educational costs of North Carolina residents attending community colleges. Legal residents of North Carolina who are enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) in an eligible program and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress may apply. Students must demonstrate financial need. Students with a bachelor’s degree are ineligible. NC Community College Grants are not available for summer sessions. North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship The North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship program was created by the General 2005 Assembly to provide assistance to needy North Carolina students attending eligible colleges and universities located with the state of North Carolina. Legal residents of North Carolina who are enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) in an eligible program and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the institution they attend may apply. Students with a bachelor’s degree are ineligible. NC Lottery Education Lottery Scholarships are not available for summer sessions. The North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship program is offered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority through College Foundation, Inc. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year they attend school. Eligibility and awards are determined annually. Details of the application process are available from the Financial Aid Office.
North Carolina Student Loan Program for Health, Science, and Mathematics This program was formerly known as the North Carolina Medical Student Loan Program, and it is operated as a Special Program Department of the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. To be eligible for the loan, students must be legal residents of North Carolina who are enrolled full time in degree programs oriented toward careers in health, mathematics, or science. Students may apply for this loan through the N.C. Education Assistance Authority. Students may attend a North Carolina post-secondary institution or eligible out-of-state institution. Award recipients are chosen according to major, academic capabilities, and financial need. Further information is available from the Financial Aid Office.
Nurse Education Scholarship Loan (NESLP) The N.C. General Assembly created this program in 1989 in an attempt to alleviate a nursing shortage and is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. NESLP awards are available to North Carolina residents that are enrolled in the LPN or the RN program. Awards are based upon financial need and other factors such as academic performance. The repayment of the loan may be forgiven by working as a nurse in North Carolina. NESLP recipient recommendations are made by the Office of Financial Aid.
The Nurse Scholars Program is a competitive, merit-based scholarship/loan program available to students who have chosen to enter the nursing profession. This program was created in 1989 by the N.C. General Assembly to address the shortage of trained nurses practicing in North Carolina. An 11-member Nurse Scholars Commission selects recipients for the award on the basis of superior academics, leadership potential, and desire to practice nursing on a full-time basis in North Carolina. Recipients must be US Citizens and NC residents. Students must plan to enter a nursing program at one of the North Carolina colleges, universities, or hospitals that offer nurse education programs which prepare students for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). Financial need is not a criterion. NSP is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. Applications may be received from any of the participating colleges offering nurse education programs, counselor offices in the high schools in North Carolina and from the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.
Wachovia Technical Scholarship This fund was established through a gift from the Wachovia Bank and Trust Company to the NC Community College System. To qualify as a candidate for this scholarship, a person must be full-time student enrolled in the second year of a two-year technical program, must demonstrate financial need and scholastic promise, and must use the scholarship to pay for books, tuition, and transportation. The recipient is selected by the Financial Aid Committee.
Gaston College Foundation Scholarships The Gaston College Foundation, Inc. offers a variety of scholarships for Gaston College students. Donors of these scholarships (clubs, individuals, businesses, foundations, etc.) help determine what criteria are used in awarding them. Applicants are considered for all scholarships for which they qualify. Scholarships that require special applications, etc. are noted. To be eligible for a Gaston College Foundation scholarship, applicants must satisfy all Gaston College admissions requirements including any required placement tests for their program of study and complete a Gaston College Foundation Scholarship Application and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Completed applications must be received by March 31. Pearl Dixon Balthis Foundation Scholarship Established in 1971, this scholarship is open to students from Gastonia or Gaston County or from NC at large if suitable applicants are not available from Gaston County. The recipients are selected based on character, academic standing, and financial need. Hershal Hoyle and Gilda R. Beam Endowed Scholarship Mrs. Gilda R. Beam established this scholarship in memory of her husband, Mr. Hershal Hoyle Beam, a Gaston County educator. This scholarship is open to any degree-seeking student enrolled full-time with a GPA of 2.5-3.0. The recipient is selected based on financial need. Recipients are required to send thank you notification to the family. Dr. Borden Bell Endowed Scholarship R. Locke Bell established this scholarship in memory of his sister, Dr. Borden Bell, who was a veterinarian. Selection is made based on academic achievement and need. Preference is given first to former participants of the Salvation Army's Boys & Girls Club, and secondly to former participants of other Boys & Girls Clubs. Virginia Brandon Endowed Scholarship Katherine R. Brandon established this scholarship in memory of her sister, Virginia Brandon. This scholarship is open to students in trade, industrial, technical, business, and nursing programs. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need. The John and Joyce Brison Endowed Scholarship Becky B. Maxon, Patsy B. Meldrum, and John Brison III established this scholarship in honor of their parents, Joyce and John Brison. This scholarship is open to Gaston County residents enrolled full-time and majoring in early childhood education programs. The recipient is selected based on academic standing and financial need. The A. Leonel Brunnemer Nursing Scholarship First Gaston Foundation established this scholarship in 2002 as a memorial to Mr. Brunnemer who served on its board for 16 years, and was chairman of its scholarship committee. The scholarship is awarded to nursing students. David Belk Cannon Family Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1996 as a memorial to Mr. David Belk Cannon's son, David Belk Cannon, Jr. and his daughter, Rebecca Cannon, both of whom died in a tragic fire. The recipients are selected based on merit and must maintain a 2.0 GPA. Special David Belk Cannon Family Scholarship application required. Dr. Helen L. Carter Memorial (Pilot Club) Scholarship The Pilot Club of Gastonia established this scholarship in 1962 as a memorial to Dr. Helen L. Carter. This scholarship is open to full-time students in a health-related field (excluding Vet-Tech) with at least a 3.0 grade point average. The recipient must be a second year student and is selected based on academic standing only. Citizens South Athena Scholarship Citizens South Bank and recipients of the Athena Award, Loretta Dodgen, Malinda Lowery, the late Helen Marvin, Regina Moody, Nancy Paschall, Patricia Skinner, Jennie Stultz, and Barbara Voorhees, established this scholarship for a promising Gaston College GED or Adult High School graduate. These donors are providing $1,500 per year for the scholarship. Polie Cloninger Endowed Scholarship Friends and family of the late Polie Q. Cloninger, Jr. established this endowed scholarship to honor his memory following his death in 2003. The scholarship is awarded to a Gaston College GED or Adult High School graduate, with preference to students seeking degrees in nursing or criminal justice. Britt Cordero Scholarship Fund Family and friends of Britt DeAnna Cordero established this fund in her memory following her tragic death in a motorcycle accident on March 19, 2004. Britt graduated from East Gaston High School in 2000 and received an Associate of Science degree from Gaston College in 2003 where she was on the Dean’s List. The award is to be given o a graduate of East Gaston High School who does not qualify for a Federal Pell grant but needs assistance. Duane Crane Science Scholarship Honors the memory of Duane Crane who was chair of the science department at Gaston College when he died in 2003. His family, friends and co-workers established the award which goes to a science student and is based on academic achievement. Ray P. Craig/Gaston County Dyeing Endowed Scholarship Established in 1987 in memory of Ray P. Craig, a former vice president of Gaston County Dyeing and first chairman of the Gaston College Board of Trustees, this scholarship is open to all students but preference is given to Gaston County Dyeing employees and their families. The recipient will be selected based on need and academic achievement. Dallas Optimist Club Scholarship The Dallas Optimist Club established this scholarship in 1998. This scholarship is open to Gaston College GED graduates who are residents of Dallas, NC and plan to enroll at Gaston College. The recipient must be under 21 years of age, and selection is based on financial need only. J. A. Dalpiaz Family Scholarship This endowed fund provides scholarship assistance to participants of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Gastonia who graduate from high school. Up to two awards will be made each year to such students who pursue a degree, certificate or diploma at Gaston College. The award is renewable for a second year and recipients may not receive the award for more than two years. The Emerald Care Home Health Nursing Scholarship The scholarship was established in 2000 by the Gaston County Home Health Agency to enhance area health care by assisting Gaston College students pursuing nursing degrees. Selection based on combination of academic achievement and need. Two letters of endorsement required. First Gaston Foundation Liberal Arts Scholarship This scholarship was initiated by the First Gaston Foundation to assist students seeking a degree in the Liberal Arts Division. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need. First National Bank Scholarship The scholarship was established to provide financial assistance for promising students living in Gaston County who have the desire and ability but not the financial resources to attend college. Recipient’s annual household income must not exceed 80% of the HUD median for Gaston County. David L. Friday Jr. Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established by the Civitan Club of Gastonia in memory of David L. Friday, Jr. who served as the first president of the Gastonia Evening Civitan Club when it was chartered in 1969. This scholarship is open to students who have demonstrated good citizenship and have community involvement. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement. Friends of NCVMA Veterinary Student Scholarship The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association provides this award to a second-year student in the Veterinary Technology Program. It is based on academic achievement and need. Betty Rhodes Gamble Scholarship A This scholarship honors the late Betty Rhodes Gamble for her years of service in the Lincoln County area. It was established by her husband, Dr. John Reeves Gamble, Jr. and is open to residents of Lincoln County. The recipient must maintain a 2.0 GPA and need may be a determining factor. Gaston County Credit Professionals International Scholarship This scholarship is open to students in business, accounting or a related field. The recipient is selected based on academic performance. Gastonia East Rotary Club Scholarship Established in 1968, this scholarship is open to Gaston County residents. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. J. Dent Goodyear and Clarice Cato Goodyear Veterinary Medical Technology Scholarship Established by Mr. and Mrs. Goodyear in 2001 to commemorate their 33rd wedding anniversary, the scholarship assists students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Medical Technology who have financial need. Oneda Sellers Harbin Endowed Scholarship Ken Harbin established this scholarship in memory of his wife, Oneda Sellers Harbin, who was killed in a traffic accident in 1995. The scholarship is awarded to a North Gaston High School female senior, where Mrs. Harbin graduated. The recipient is selected based on need, academic achievement, career interest, and community involvement. Contact North Gaston guidance counselor to apply. Alison Nichols, a 1992 graduate of GC's mechanical drafting program, established this award in memory of her instructor, Andy Hawkins. Architectural Technology students are given preference, but it is open to students in any Industrial Technologies program. Selection is based primarily on need, with funds to be used for the purchase of books and tools. Friends, family and co-workers established this award to honor Alex Hegenbart, retired chairman of the Gaston College music department on his 80th birthday, and in celebration of his 25 years of service to the college. The award is based on academic achievement and interest in music. This scholarship was established in 1965 under the will of Howard Max Crowder. It is open to Cherryville High School seniors who will be attending Gaston College. The recipient is selected based on scholastic ability, personality, and need with no emphasis on any one factor. Erlene G. Hogan Memorial Scholarship Eric and Jennie Hogan and the Reverend Tom Hogan established this scholarship in memory of Eric’s mother and Tom’s first wife. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement and need and must have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The recipient must be a legal citizen of the USA and must be either working while attending college or independently responsible for paying their college expenses. The donors also ask that the recipient consider establishing a similar scholarship in the future if and when they are able. This scholarship was established by Marshall and Jeanne Rauch through the Rauch Family Foundation, Inc. in honor of their friend, J. Mack Holland. This scholarship is open to students who live in Gaston or Lincoln counties but preference is given to students in pre-law or paralegal studies. The recipient is selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need. Benjamin Clyde Hord Scholarship Paula H. Dedmon, Gaston College biology instructor, established this award in memory of her father, Benjamin Clyde Hord who died in 1986. Although he had little formal education, Mr. Hord was a self-made man who loved learning. The world was his classroom as he traveled all over the globe during a 23-year military career. The recipient is selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need, and must have a minimum GPA of 2.75. This scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Fred K. Houser and Creola Houser who owned the Cherryville Eagle for many years. This scholarship is open to graduates of Cherryville High School. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic promise and financial need. Nominations are accepted from Cherryville High School. The number of recipients is determined by the amount of funds available. Bonnie Hoyle Memorial Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established as a memorial to Bonnie Hoyle, an instructor in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program, who was killed in a traffic accident. This scholarship is open to second-year students majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology with a GPA of 3.0. The recipient is selected based on academic achievement. Hunter Huss Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1968 in honor of Mr. Hunter Huss for years of service as an educator. This scholarship is open to Gaston County high school graduates. The selection is based on academic progress. Ruth and Harry Huss Endowed Scholarship Mr. and Mrs. Harry Huss established this scholarship in 1989. Mr. Huss spent his career as an educator in Gaston County Schools. The recipients are selected based on demonstration of financial need and must be Gaston County residents. T. Jeffers Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established by the Gaston County Organization for Community Concerns in honor of T. Jeffers, who was an educator in Gaston County and the mayor of Gastonia. The recipients are selected based on academic merit and/or need. Special application required, and is available from the Gaston County Organization for Community Concerns by calling (704) 864-5850. Dr. Janet Johnston Honorary Scholarship This scholarship was established by the Association for the Education of Young Children and friends of Dr. Janet Johnston in honor of her service to the community. This scholarship is open to students majoring in Early Childhood Education. The recipient will be selected based on need. The Rebecca and Cramer Little Scholarship This scholarship honors the memory of Rebecca Little who taught school in Gaston County and took teacher renewal courses at Gaston College, and Cramer Little, a supervisor at Firestone who attended Gaston College for supervisor training and lawnmower repair classes. The award goes to a student seeking an associate or higher degree in any field. The award was established by Gastonia Sheet Metal to provide financial assistance to students seeking a diploma in the Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology Program. This scholarship is awarded to two students. One student may be awarded up to $2,500 in scholarship assistance, while a second may be awarded up to $1,250. Recipients of the Ron and Judy Long Scholarship will be given the opportunity to work at Gastonia Sheet Metal as an intern during the course of their study. William Thomas Love Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established through the estate of Elisabeth Love More as a memorial to her father, William Thomas Love, who was a mayor of Mount Holly and of Gastonia, and served as Sheriff of Gaston County. This scholarship is open to Gaston County residents. The recipients are selected based on a combination of need, career interest, academic achievement, and community involvement.
The Gaston County Gem & Mineral Club established this scholarship in loving memory of James H. "Jim" Lynn, who died April 8, 2001 after spending more than 32 years at the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia. The award is open to full-time students residing in Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland, Mecklenburg, or York counties who are majoring in science. Machining Technology Scholarship Several local machining companies provide this award to students seeking a degree or certificate in the machining technology program. Selection is based on academic achievement and need. Eugene D. Maloney, MD Scholarship Judith Robinson Maloney created this endowed award in honor of her husband as he celebrated a milestone birthday. Preference is given to a student who desires to be a physician or who seeks a career in aviation. Recipients are selected based on a combination of need and academic achievement. The award was established by Dr. Gene Maloney and his wife, Judith Robinson Maloney, a graduate of Gaston College, in memory of their son who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. The scholarship provides financial assistance to a special needs student. James H. Martin, Jr. Nursing Scholarship The First Gaston Foundation, Inc. established this award in memory of Mr. James H. Martin, Jr., a past trustee of the Foundation. Selection is based on academic achievement and is awarded to a student in the Associate Degree Nursing program or the LPN to RN program. The Caldwell W. Nixon Endowed Scholarship Sallie Nixon established this award in memory of her husband, Caldwell Nixon, who was a World War II veteran, an area director of the Veterans Administration in Nebraska and West Virginia, and a member of the board of directors of 14 service-related organizations. He was influential in the renovation of the old Lincolnton High School into a home for Gaston College and the Senior Center, where a room bears his name. North Carolina Association of Veterinary Technicians Scholarship The award is given to a student in the Veterinary Technology program and is based on a combination of academic achievement and need. Gaston College Vet Tech faculty is involved in the selection process. PSNC Energy Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students This scholarship was established by PSNC Energy to provide financial assistance to non-traditional students, including displaced workers, older returning students and those in the Life Skills programs. Fred A. Ratchford, Sr. Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established by Mrs. Louise K. Ratchford and children in memory of her husband, Fred A. Ratchford, Sr. This scholarship is open to Gaston County residents or natives. The recipient is selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need. The recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. This scholarship honors Jeanne Rauch for her many contributions to the development and appreciation of art in North Carolina. It provides $1,500 in annual scholarship assistance for two Gaston College students in the Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) program at $750 each. Applicants must submit three (3) pieces of art in any media. An essay of 25 words or less is also required, explaining why the applicant is seeking a degree in art and what their career plans are for the future. Jack Robinson Endowed Scholarship Mrs. Carol Robinson established this scholarship in honor of her husband, Jack Robinson, a retired pilot. This scholarship is open to all students. The recipients are selected based on a combination of academic achievement, need, and an interest in aviation. William M. and Ira Blanche Robinson Fund This endowed fund was established through a bequest by William Marcus “Bill” Robinson who died March 8, 2005. The fund honors Bill’s memory as well as that of his sister Blanche, who became mother and father to him when their parents died when Bill was only 12 years old. His will directed that income from the fund be used to assist needy and deserving students and for other unrestricted purposes. Guidelines TBD. Pauline Scruggs Memorial (Altrusa Club) Scholarship This scholarship was established by the Altrusa Club of Gastonia in memory of Pauline Scruggs. This scholarship is open to a student who has resided or worked in Gaston County for at least one year. The recipient is selected based on her character, integrity, academic achievement and need. State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Scholarship The SECU Foundation established this two-year “People Helping People” scholarship program, providing two scholarships to each North Carolina Community College. Recipients must be NC residents and US citizens with demonstrated need. Scholarship recipients in good academic standing may receive the scholarship up to a maximum of four (4) consecutive semesters. Warren and Rebecca Shiver Scholarship Fund Gaston College graduate Kayren S. Brantley established this scholarship in 2001 on the occasion of her mother's retirement from teaching. Rebecca Shiver was a 29-year-old mother of four when she came to Gaston College in 1965, with the blessing and support of her husband, Warren. This scholarship is available to students 21 years old and over who pursue a degree in any field. \Ruth and George Sikes Scholarship Peggy Foster, along with her sister Johnnie Vanhoy, established this scholarship in memory of their parents, Ruth Ford Sikes and George Raymond Sikes. The Ruth and George Sikes Scholarship provides financial assistance to a Gaston College student in the Office Systems Technology program of study, and is renewable for a second year. This scholarship is open to all students. The recipient is selected based on a combination of academic achievement and need. German-based Stabilus Corporation established this scholarship following the move of its North American headquarters to Gastonia. This award is open to residents of Gaston and Lincoln counties and to Stabilus employees and their families. The recipient is selected based on a combination of need, career interest, academic achievement, and community involvement. Preference will be given to applicants in engineering/technical fields of study. John and Rose Stanley established this fund through the Community Foundation of Gaston County in memory of their daughter, Susan. Stewart Family Endowed Scholarship Guidelines TBD. Evelyn Rankin Stowe Endowed Nursing Scholarship Mary E. Stowe established this scholarship in honor of her mother, Evelyn Rankin Stowe, who was a Public Health Nurse in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties and spent her career promoting health and wellness programs. This scholarship is open to Gaston College students seeking an associate degree in nursing. The recipient is selected based on a combination of career interest, academic achievement and community involvement. Robert and Maureen Tull Endowed Nursing Scholarship Robert Tull and friends established this scholarship in honor of his 1997 retirement from the Timken Company after more than 35 years of service. This scholarship also serves as a memorial to Mr. Tull's late wife, Laurie Tull, who received very good nursing care while she was terminally ill. This scholarship is open to residents of Lincoln County enrolled in the nursing (ADN) program. The recipient is selected based on financial need, volunteer experience with hospitals, nursing homes, and elderly groups along with a strong desire to be in the nursing profession. Dr. Hugh E. Tyner Nursing Scholarship Dr. Tyner, a retired surgeon in Gaston County, established this fund to provide a $2,500 James E. and Mildred W. Waggoner Scholarship The scholarship is open to current employees of Sunshine Uniform Services and their immediate families. Recipients may be either full or part-time students and may be enrolled in any course of study at Gaston College. Don Walser Family Endowed Accounting Scholarship Don Walser, former chair of the Gaston College Board of Trustees established this scholarship. It is open to second-year students majoring in accounting, business administration, and administrative office technology or business computer programming with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to accounting students. The recipient will be selected based on academic performance and need. Elizabeth Matthews Welton Scholarship This award was established in memory of Elizabeth Matthews Welton by her nieces and nephews, Anna Belle M. Kelly, Nora M. Hale and Vann Matthews. The award goes to a female resident of Gaston County who is seeking a business-related degree. Academic achievement and financial need are considered in selection. The award is renewable for a second year for recipients who earn at a least a 3.0 GPA. The Mother Bernice Wilson Nursing Scholarship Established in memory of Mother Bernice Ballard Wilson as a tribute to her commitment to her children, both biological and "adopted", and to her dedicated and faithful church work. Other Gaston College Scholarships Gaston College has established academic scholarships for high school seniors residing in Gaston and Lincoln counties who plan to enroll at Gaston College as a freshman during the year of their high school graduation. High school seniors interested in academic scholarships should submit the appropriate application for the Management Honors (Academic) Scholarship or Careers Scholarship. These applications must be signed by the student's high school counselor. Completed applications must be received by March 31. Management Honors (Academic) Scholarship These scholarships are designed for high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and plan to attend Gaston College. The scholarships are not based on need. To be eligible for scholarships, applicants must have maintained a "B" average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better during high school and plan to attend Gaston College full time. Applicants must satisfy all requirements for their proposed programs of study. Applicants must be from Gaston and Lincoln counties. Scholarships are renewable for a second year as long as the student maintains a 3.0 while enrolled at Gaston College. Management Honors (Academic) Scholarship Form. These scholarships are for high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and intend to pursue careers in specified engineering technologies or industrial technologies majors and who satisfy all entrance requirements for their proposed programs of study at Gaston College. These scholarships are not based on need. To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must have maintained a "B" average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better during high school and plan to attend Gaston College full time. Applicants must intend to pursue a degree, diploma, or certificate in engineering technologies or industrial technologies. Scholarships are renewable for a second year as long as the student maintains a 3.0 while enrolled at Gaston College, but the award will not be extended beyond three semesters for a diploma program or five semesters for a degree program.
