Gaston College will celebrate its 50th anniversary throughout the 2014-2015 academic year, with a calendar of activities to commemorate a half-century of commitment to Gaston and Lincoln counties. The signature sponsor of the College’s Golden Anniversary Celebration activities is CaroMont Health.
Beginning in September, the Give 50 for 50 Challenge will encourage Gaston College students, alumni, faculty, staff and retirees to volunteer at least 50 hours of community service to organizations serving Gaston and Lincoln counties. Hours will be tracked and participants will be recognized at a ceremony in May of 2015.
A Community Kick-Off Celebration will take place on September 26, beginning at 5:30 p.m., in the Myers Center Breezeway on the college’s Dallas campus. Country music singer and songwriter—and Gaston College alumnus—Jimmy Wayne will be on hand for a community barbecue and will give a concert at the college beginning at 7 p.m. in the Myers Center Multipurpose Auditorium. This event will be free of charge and open to the public limited to the first 500 people.
Jimmy Wayne also will be the first guest presenter in the Gaston College Alumni Speaker’s Series, which invites successful graduates to share their stories with current students, faculty and staff. Additional keynote speakers will be announced.
Other anniversary activities include a recognition event for scholarship donors and their student recipients to share time together, a retrospective art show featuring the work of former Gaston College faculty, staff and students, and, in May 2015, a 50th Anniversary Black Tie Gala that will recognize an Alumnus of Distinction and honor former Gaston College trustees and foundation board members and the contributions the college has made to the community.
In early 2015, The Gaston Gazette will feature an insert profiling Gaston College’s history and providing information on the scheduled 50th Anniversary Celebration activities.
